How to Start Your own Dollars a Day for Conservation

  1. Select the Non-Profit Organizations
Some operators choose to fund umbrella organizations such as the Alaska Conservation Foundation. Others fund regional groups working to protect the specific areas they use. Many contribute to the Alaska Institute for Sustainable Recreation & Tourism (AISRT) the research and education affiliate of AWRTA, which works to link conservation and tourism interests.

  2. Inform Your Guests About the Program and Where the Contributions Go
Introduce the program to your clients in promotional materials such as your brochure, website, and remind them again when they make their reservation. Don't forget to mention that the contribution is voluntary and tax deductible.

How some businesses promote the Dollars a Day for Conservation Program on their websites:
  3. Include the Contribution on Your Invoice or use the Brochure Provided by AWRTA
AWRTA can provide you a simple brochure that your business can copy and include with your invoice. Some businesses choose to specifically itemize the suggested voluntary Dollars a Day Contribution on their invoice. It can also be helpful to include a statement that refers guests to a specific place where they can look for more information on the program (such as a brochure or web page).

  4. Post Contributions to a Liability Account
Participating businesses can post the Dollars a Day for Conservation contributions to a liability account set up within their balance sheet. This will set up the "pass-through" program from a financial point of view. This account simply shows that your business received cash that it will "owe" to the groups you are supporting by your pass through program.

  5. Distribute the Contributions on a Regular Schedule
On a monthly basis, the funds in this account are split equally among the non-profit conservation organizations. In this way, a participant business serves the function of collecting contributions for their guests and "passing through" the funds to the organizations. Participating businesses bear all the costs of collection and bookkeeping.
How do I Sign Up?

Send an email to AWRTA staff at: info@awrta.org, expressing your interest in the program.

Once the program is implemented, send AWRTA a letter with a copy of your materials stating participation in the program and the recipient non-profit environmental & conservation organizations. At the end of each year, AWRTA sends a report form to each participant so that we can compile the total contributions made to conservation organizations by AWRTA members.
