AWRTA hires new director Hanna Waterstrat

AWRTA is pleased to announce the hiring of a new executive director. Hanna Waterstrat earned an MBA in sustainable business from Bainbridge Graduate institute and has previous experience as a conservation professional for non-profits, government and private industry. She supports AWRTA's mission and vision and is committed to both wilderness conservation and small business sustainability. We all look forward to working with Hanna on the critical and exciting issues on our plates in 2010 and beyond.

AWRTA V.P. joins the Explorers Club

AWRTA would like to congratulate Vice President Dan Oberlatz for his recent trip to New York for inclusion into the prestigious Explorers Club. Since 1904, the Explorers Club has celebrated the spirit of exploration and AWRTA is proud that one of its own is being recognized as a modern-day explorer. We all look forward to talking to Dan about the experience and learning the best spots to hit in Manhattan as a V.I.P.!

Adventure Green Alaska accepting 2010 applications
Adventure Green Alaska (AGA)--Alaska's only certification program for sustainable tourism businesses--is once again accepting applications. The application period will be open through November 30th and certification awards will be announced on January 30, 2010. Welcome members and friends. This is an exciting time of change at the Alaska Wilderness Recreation & Tourism Association (AWRTA). We have been working hard on behalf of our members to address the impacts of the economic downturn by providing an affordable marketing alternative for smaller, rural, and wilderness-based Alaskan tourism businesses. We are also committed to increasing public awareness about sustainaiblity issues in our amazing industry. In keeping with these goals, we are proud to announce the imminent launch of www.visitwildalaska.com, AWRTA's new consumer website designed to help market and promote sustainable Alaska businesses to current and prospective Alaska visitors. With generous donations from Alaska Wildland Adventures and National Wildlife Federation, the AWRTA board of directors has been working with some of the nation's premier travel marketers and web designers to create a brand new, consumer oriented website. This "best-in-class" Alaska tourism website will feature AWRTA business members and promote sustainable tourism practices. Along with our groundbreaking new certification program, Adventure Green Alaska (www.adventuregreenalaska.org) , we believe that Visit Wild Alaska will change the marketing landscape for AWRTA members now and well into the future. In the next few days, we will be sending out AWRTA membership dues reminders for the 2010 calendar year. This will allow you to choose between basic and premium representation on the new Visit Wild Alaska website. All current 2009 AWRTA members should update their business information for the new Visit Wild Alaska website via the following brief online questionnaire by October 31, 2009. This will allow us to display current information about your business on the Visit Wild Alaska website.
